CERAMIX Intro
Ceramix (clay, wood, assemblage) 2024
We are thrilled to host CeraMix for the fourth consecutive year
The idea was conceived by Koos van Bergen to bring together a diverse group of established and emerging artists to explore the intersection of ceramics with another medium. This year’s exciting pairing—ceramics with wood and assemblage—promises a dynamic interplay of materials, textures and ideas.
With 53 incredibly talented artists participating, the exhibition exudes a vibrant and optimistic tone, perfectly suited for spring, a season of rebirth and abundance. The artworks embody a wonderful balance between the decorative and the conceptual. Bright colours in the works of Lissa Claassens and Tiffany Wallace bounce and reflect around the gallery, infusing the space with energy and joy, while more contemplative works like Jo Roets The Harkening invite deeper reflection.
Pieces such as Juhlene Möller’s *It Takes a Village* and Tricia Visser’s *Perpetual Memorium* engage the mind with their cerebral depth, while Nicolette von Wiese pushes the boundaries of traditional fiber craft with her innovative embroidery pieces, offering a fresh take on heritage materials.
Scale is also something to mention. Works vary from the monumental as seen in John Bauers large tile composites to the very minute works of Ena de Villiers.
A strong connection to the environment is palpable in many works. Janet Ormond’s delicate, posy-like structures, made from retrieved sea plastic, draw attention to the ongoing issue of pollution and its impact on our world. This theme of sustainability and environmental awareness resonates with many other artists in the exhibition, who are working with found and reclaimed materials. In a more literal sense Koos van Bergen’s works interact directly with nature and juxtapose composite shapes and vibrant glazes with air plants.
This brings to mind the ongoing *Homo Faber* exhibition in Venice, which celebrates the finest artisans from around the globe. *Homo Faber* showcases exceptional craftsmanship in ceramics, woodwork, and textiles, with a focus on preserving traditional skills while fostering innovation in design. We are incredibly proud to congratulate two of our own, Hennie Meyer and Karlien van Rooyen, who have been selected to participate in this prestigious event. It is an honour to exhibit their works alongside the creations of all the remarkable artists here today.
Like *Homo Faber*, CeraMix speaks a universal language—one that honours the preservation of traditional crafts while embracing innovation. We are proud to highlight the work of South African artists, whose contributions to the global stage reflect our country’s rich craft and design heritage. Through exhibitions like CeraMix, curators strive to foster artistic growth and inspire new directions in the art world.
Please note that the exhibition will be up for the month of September and our e-commerce site will carry on till the end of October.
