Vuleka Art Competition 2024

Competition Rules - Round 1

  • The competition is open to all artists 18 years of age or older on 1 January 2024 residing in South Africa.
  • The competition is not open to FIRST PRIZE WINNERS of previous Vuleka competitions.
  • The competition is open only to artists who have not had a solo exhibition in the past three years. (academic solo exhibitions are exempt)
  • Only original works of art completed during 2023/2024 may be entered.
  • There is no limit to the number of works that may be entered.
  • Artworks in all media are allowed, painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, ceramics, film, digital, etc.
  • All works are submitted at the owner’s risk. Although great care will be taken with artworks, neither Art.b nor the sponsors will accept any responsibility for the damage, loss or theft of any works of art while in transit or on exhibition.
  • Works consisting of multiple parts (i.e. diptychs or triptychs) will be accepted and must be entered as one work. The work must be submitted on one photograph for the digital entry.
  • Collaborative artworks compiled by a maximum of two artists will be accepted. One artist have to be owner of the artwork.
  • The size of an artwork may not exceed 2m x 2m.
  • Sculptures must be able to stand without support and may not exceed 100kg.
  • No performance art will be accepted.
  • Video projection/film or multimedia art entries must make arrangements for their own means of projection.
  • The copyright of all works submitted should belong to the submitting artist. A work submitted for the competition must have been created by the entrant, i.e. it must be the artist’s original work. All works remain the property of the entrant for the duration of the competition and exhibition unless a work is sold at the exhibition.
  • It remains the artist’s responsibility to obtain proper permissions for the usage of anyone’s image, whether from a sitter or a creator of a reference image, where portraits are submitted.
  • All entries are to be for sale at a market-related price and b Gallery will act as the appointed agent. The entrant must provide a selling price for each work. Art.b Gallery will deduct a 33.3% commission on all sales. Art.b Gallery is not VAT registered and therefore VAT is not charged. Art.b Gallery’s appointment will automatically terminate when the work has been returned to the entrant, or sold.
  • Images of artworks must be submitted online at www.artb.co.za from 1:00 on 12 June 2024 to 23:59 on 4 July 2024.

Note: The Proof of Payment for the entry must be uploaded on the website, at the same time as the work(s) are uploaded (see form below).

Judging

  • The adjudicators will select +- 80 works to go through to Round 2.
  • All Vuleka entrants should refrain from posting any updates of their entries until the opening of the exhibition.
  • Unsuccessful entries that are not collected within a week of notification will be discarded.
  • Finalists should arrange for the collection of their works within a week after the closing of the exhibition; failure to do this will result in the disposal of artwork due to storage costs.
  • Judges’ decisions are final, and no correspondence will be entered into.
